The Six Heart Virtues

Permeating and circulating throughout the sub-quantum field, divine love is the lifeblood of God that interconnects the entire multiverse. This divine love is intelligent and operates in the human world through six basic qualities. These are the six (energetic) heart virtues of appreciation, compassion, forgiveness, humility, understanding and valor.”

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a virtue as “a commendable quality or trait” and “a particular moral excellence”

Using John’s quote, the heart is like a portal in which these virtues can be accessed, transmitted, and received. Working with the virtues, we can shift our daily interactions with the world around us to more thoughtful loving expressions. The virtues become a means by which we filter or process sensory data coming into our minds. They can also influence what we send out into the world energetically, thoughts, actions, and behaviors.

The virtues are a means to manage our emotions. Our emotions are often the first defining influence on our lower consciousness. As situations come up in our lives, we have an emotional reaction to situations that push our buttons. Our buttons are unresolved past experiences. The emotional reaction sets off the mind to defend, justify, judge, attack or make up stories that will try to avoid feeling the emotion.

The emotion is attached to a memory of something from the past that was uncomfortable or painful and was never resolved. That point when the emotion rises up is a defining moment; we have a choice if we can notice it.

Emotional self-mastery is an outcome of practicing the heart virtues. It is a practice in rightful thinking, right action, emotional self-management, and behavioral intelligence. it is a means to bring the body, mind, and emotions into a coherent state.

In the coming posts, I will give examples of working with the heart virtues in everyday situations and how this can transform our lives for the better.

As I mentioned in my first post, I was fixated on trying to find something to make me happy. In doing this, I was essentially in a trance-like state, caught in my ego-personality believing that I could think my way into being happy, avoid what makes me unhappy or try to change the world to comply with my preferences. But the ego self is constructed of old memories, habits, and behaviors which leads to a never-ending cycle of looking for some outcome or accomplishment to identify with as who I am. My essential self was not home; there was no room or space for it with all the noise of the ego mind constantly thinking and searching.

We have to be present for our essential self to emerge. To benefit from using the heart virtues, we have to be acutely aware and alert. If we are fixated on compulsive thinking, we cannot see what is going on inside us. If we don’t see something, we cannot change it.

We have all had the experience of listening to someone who suddenly paused and asked us a question about what they just said. We look at them blank-faced and embarrassed. We were not listening; we were someplace else, lost in thought. This is very common, unfortunately, and we all spend too much time in this preoccupied state of a mentally constructed fantasy inner world. We are on automatic pilot. It is very unproductive, and we are not fully alive in those states, at least not consciously. We are sleepwalking through life not fully engaged in the world we are interacting with. So, it is no surprise that we struggle with our lives when we have given the steering wheel to our ego.

The ability to be present in the moment can’t be overstated enough here. If this is not practiced to some level of proficiency, then it will be very hard to benefit from practicing the six heart virtues or any other life-changing modality.

Practicing the heart virtues requires us to become more present and catch ourselves as we drift off into the ego mind. We learn to notice what is happening in our sphere or experience; in this case, our mind of compulsive thinking. Once we notice, we can choose to change our reality.

Presence

Meditation is perhaps the most common practice for being present and becoming aware of our inner world. Anyone who has meditated knows how difficult it is to stop not listening to the mind. The mind is like a freight train that cannot be stopped. For me, this inability to stop thinking led me to quit meditating after several attempts earlier in my life. I just felt that I could not do this and I gave up. But I did not have the right teacher in those early days, I was misguided. I did not have to stop thinking, I just had to witness the thoughts, to continuously notice them and not engage with them. Once I understood that this was the true practice of meditating, I fully embraced it, practiced it and found meaningful insights into my own inner world through observation. Now I have been meditating twice a day ever since.

Eventually, I found moments of stillness where a new sense of self emerged as my central point of being. The one observer, the one seer, the one who experiences, the container where everything happens. Consciousness.

From this state of presence, I can interact with the world as an observer and I can respond, react and create as a human. I am a reality-maker, co-creating with the source of life.

Some of my most blissful moments come to me unexpectedly, while walking my dog, sitting quietly in nature, or driving my car in the country. I have moments of pure bliss; the experience of just being alive, seeing the beauty of life and feeling that I am the eyes of God looking out into the world. These are ecstatic moments.

There are many ways to be and practice being present. We all find what works best for us, but it is our intention that is critical in making any change.

In my next post, I will talk about the “Instant of transformation”. It is the instant when change can happen, and it will present itself to you over and over again. But it is only an instant and I call it an instant because it is so fleeting. These instant opportunities will be missed almost all the time. It takes a high level of alert present to notice the instant and then follow through with transforming your reality. Until then.
